A Soft, Skin-First Makeup Routine in Five Steps

Close-up of a smiling woman wrapped in an ochre shawl

Flawless makeup is ninety percent preparation: hydrated skin, the right primer and thin layers beat full coverage every time.

Begin with skincare, not foundation. Cleanse, add a hydrating serum and wait two full minutes before moisturizer. Makeup grips supple skin and slides off dry patches, so the base must be calm before colour arrives.

Prime with intention: mattify only the T-zone, illuminate cheekbones, fill pores just across the nose. One primer everywhere is how makeup goes flat by noon.

Two whisper-thin layers look like skin; one thick layer looks like makeup.

Apply foundation in sheer passes with a damp sponge, pressing rather than dragging. Two whisper-thin layers look like skin; one thick layer looks like makeup. Conceal only what still shows, in triangles, not masks.

Set strategically with loose powder on the center of the face, then mist. Setting spray melts powder into skin and adds the hours back that blotting steals.

The flawless order of operations

  • Skincare first, then a two-minute wait before any primer.
  • Sheer layers pressed with a damp sponge, never dragged.
  • Cream before powder: blush and contour melt better underneath.
  • Mist to finish; powder only where the light hits hardest.

Questions, answered

Why does my foundation separate?

Usually silicone primer under water-based foundation, or skipping the skincare wait.

Matte or dewy for photos?

Satin. Fully matte reads flat and fully dewy reads shiny on camera.

How do I make it last twelve hours?

Thin layers, strategic powder and a midday blot, never a midday re-powder.
